Joke Sylva, an experienced figure in the Nollywood industry, recently acknowledged Africa Magic’s transformative impact on Nigerian entertainment since its launch in 2003.
In an interview with The Guardian Newspaper, she highlighted how the platform revolutionized movie production standards by making significant investments in equipment and technology, thereby catalyzing the development and nurturing of talents within the sector.
She particularly praised the popular series, Tinsel, for its contribution to elevating storytelling and production quality within Nollywood.
Reflecting on this, she noted, “Tinsel seemed like a glimpse into the future of Nollywood. When Tinsel first debuted, there were very few studios operating at its level of storytelling. Now, however, many more have risen to that standard, thus envisioning a bright future for Nollywood.”
Regarding talent development, Sylva emphasized how Africa Magic has continuously fostered the growth of talents both in front of and behind the camera. “Many individuals who began their careers on Africa Magic have now become prominent figures in the industry,” she stated. “Personalities like Femi Odugbemi, known for his works on Tinsel and Battleground, have emerged as major players in television production. Africa Magic has not only provided technical support for production but has also served as a launchpad for many performers.”
To mark its 20th anniversary, Africa Magic has premiered a series of original shows, including Slum King, Masquerades of Aniedo, Chronicles, Love and Light, among others. As part of their anniversary celebrations, the premium Africa Magic channel, Showcase, is now accessible to GOtv Supa+ and DStv Compact customers until November 30, allowing more viewers to enjoy the new content.
For those eager to be part of the festivities and to access the compelling content lineup during this period, they are advised to stay connected to their DStv or GOtv. They can download the My DStv or MyGOtv app or dial *288# to subscribe, renew, or upgrade their subscription.
