Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Di Lorenzo scored the goals as Napoli defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to go to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
With Mario Gotze finding pockets of space and forming strong connections with Jesper Lindstrom and Randal Kolo Muani, the hosts made a strong first impression on the incoming Serie A winners and had chances to grab the lead. They were unable to capitalize on their quick start, and despite Kevin Trapp saving Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s penalty, Napoli led at the half thanks to Osimhen.
During the half, their woes multiplied when Kolo Muani, who had been on a scoring spree, was dismissed for a challenge on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa just before the hour mark. Anguissa initiated the subsequent move for a magnificent team goal by floating the ball into Kvaratskhelia’s foot, whose perfect backheel left it on a platter for captain Di Lorenzo to finish and end the game.
Napoli’s outstanding campaign is still going strong, and they’ll be hoping to make an impression in the competition’s semifinals, barring any disasters at home.
