Clubs, Football Stars Pay Tributes to Christian Atsu

Ghanaian footballer passes on from earthquake in Turkey.

Over two weeks after the Turkey earthquake, football player Christian Atsu was discovered dead inside the wreckage of his home, his agent reported. The 31-year-old Ghanaian international played for Everton, Chelsea, and Newcastle in the Premier League. After the earthquake on February 6 that led to the collapse of his flat in Antakya, Hatay, Atsu had been missing.

On Saturday, his agent Nana Sechere, who has been in Hatay, tweeted confirmation of the story, writing:

 “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

Current football stars, ex-football players, other sporting icons from around the world like Didier Drogba, Asamoah Gyan, Felix Afena Gyan and football clubs like Chelsea and FC Porto have started paying their respect to the fallen black star of Ghana with Didier Drogba who posted on twitter saying: ” My deepest condolences to his family, this is unreal Rest in peace my brother #ChristianAtsu “.

Black star Mohammed Kudus who plies his footballing trade in the Netherlands with Ajax FC also paid tribute to his compatriot after his wonder strike against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.

Chelsea FC also joined in to pay respects to their former player just before their game against Southampton on Saturday. The Blues also wrote on their official Twitter account: “Everyone at Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of our former player, Christian Atsu. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”
