Spotify Appoints Vinka as EQUAL Africa Ambassador for October

Spotify has named the accomplished and chart-topping Ugandan artist Vinka as its EQUAL Africa Ambassador for October. EQUAL Africa is an initiative spearheaded by Spotify with the goal of diminishing gender inequality within the music industry. It aims to shine a spotlight on and amplify the voices of female artists hailing from across the African continent. Vinka joins a group of exceptional artists known for their strength, talent, and, of course, remarkable music, including notable names like Makhadzi, Maandy, and Xeniah Manasse, to name just a few.

Vinka’s introduction to the world of music was influenced by artists such as Awilo Longomba and Koffi Olomide, whose music frequently played during her upbringing. Initially, she entered the music industry as a dancer, a role she eventually transitioned from to delve into artist management.

She remarked, “When I began working as an artist manager at the record company, I fell in love with music and seized the opportunity when it presented itself.”

This shift from managing technical aspects to taking the mic marked the beginning of a thriving music career for Vinka, during which she continuously produced hit after hit, with songs like “Malaika” and “Thank God” showcasing her artistic prowess.

Her unwavering dedication to her music and her fans became evident during her 2019 campaign to release a new single on the first Friday of each month that year.

Vinka refuses to be confined to a specific genre and readily embraces dancehall and other African musical influences. She characterizes her music as catchy with a distinctive voice, tone, and vibe.

“Vinka is a testament to the vibrancy and growth of Uganda’s music industry, and she serves as a prime example of a female artist in Africa who is revolutionizing the music industry with her unconventional and innovative music marketing techniques,” stated Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu.

Offering advice to aspiring young artists, Vinka shared, “They have to believe in themselves, stay focused, and never give up. You have to invest your time and effort to make it work.”
