LG Electronics Celebrates World Environment Day, Calls for Global Action Against Plastic Pollution

Global Consumer Electronics Leader, LG Electronics joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s World Environment Day by mobilizing members of its staff to participate in the #beatplasticpollution.

World Environment Day is an annual event observed on June 5, highlighting the urgent environmental challenges we face and providing a platform for people worldwide to discuss efforts in protecting and restoring the Earth.

In 2023, the focus of World Environment Day is on combating plastic pollution, a grave environmental issue that poses threats to our oceans, wildlife, and human well-being.

Under the United Nations’ theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution,” governments, organizations, and individuals globally are coming together to address this growing menace.

Plastic pollution has reached alarming levels, with an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste entering our oceans each year.

Single-use plastics like bottles, bags, and straws contribute significantly to this crisis, taking hundreds of years to decompose and causing irreversible harm to marine life.

During the World Environment Day celebration, Mr. Dong Youn Kim, the Managing Director of LG Electronics West Africa Operations, emphasized the significance of this occasion. He highlighted the opportunity it provides for global citizens, governments, and businesses to unite and take decisive action against plastic pollution. He encouraged reevaluating consumption patterns, embracing sustainable alternatives, and advocating for stricter regulations on plastic production and disposal.

LG Electronics embarked on a cleaning exercise as part of their contribution to addressing environmental degradation and celebrating World Environment Day. The company continuously designs products that meet global environmental standards, enabling consumers to experience a cleaner and greener lifestyle. Mr. Kim reiterated the need for people worldwide to engage in activities that protect the environment and its inhabitants.

Mariam Lawani, the CEO of Greenhill Recycling, expressed her pleasure in collaborating with LG Electronics on this project. She urged other stakeholders to follow suit and called upon individuals, communities, businesses, and governments to take a stand against plastic pollution. By making conscious choices and implementing sustainable practices, significant progress can be made in preserving our planet for future generations.

The cleaning exercise took place at Nigeria Army Shopping Complex, The Arena in Lagos State, aligning with this year’s global theme of #beatplasticpollution. The objective was to create a more nature-friendly environment that ensures sustainability. The event saw active participation from LG Electronics Nigeria staff, members of Solution 17, and Greenhill Recycling.

LG Electronics has adopted the use of a new composite fiber material that reduces product weight and utilizes recyclable packaging for their latest LG OLED TVs. The company’s commitment to environmentally-conscious design is also evident in its Soundbar line-up. LG prioritizes sustainability to promote a healthier and better lifestyle, incorporating innovative features like AI DD for fabric protection and steam technology for effective stain and bacteria removal in clothing care appliances.

World Environment Day serves as a reminder for LG to reaffirm its dedication to environmental stewardship and continue developing innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.
